A few thoughts on happies in my life lately….
1. A couple months ago, I was super bummed because I had torn our apartment apart and couldn’t find my grad school copy of Hume’s A Treatise of Human Nature. It had all my notes, my lovingly dog-eared pages… I was more bummed than I thought I would be. I shed a tear (not literally) and purchased an e-book so I could finish reading the third section, as I had been meaning to do since May. Fast forward to a few days ago when I was looking for books to use as a stand for my keyboard at work (makeshift standing desk, booyah) and found my Hume book on my work bookshelf!! HAPPY DAY! Don’t ask me why I decided to take Hume to work with me, other than there is no place where Hume is not appropriate, but I remain elated that my hard copy still resides with me and is not lost to the ether.
2. My lower back has been a mess for months, and I’ve been avoiding leg day at the gym in fear I would continue to exacerbate an injury and intensify the pain. (#brolyfe) In the meantime, I’ve been making sure to have impeccable form while doing Insanity and started adding in sessions with Wallace the Light Family Ab Wheel twice a week to strengthen my core and take pressure off my lower back. Those two efforts have alleviated my lower back pain… but I think it hasn’t so much left my body as it has migrated down to or morphed into a sharp pain in my right leg, a pain which bears all the signs of sciatica. Sigh. So NOW I’m adding in more hamstring and glute stretches, foam rolling like a champ, and planning to add yoga back into my weekly routine (while also taking a couple Ibuprofen twice a day) in the hope of finding a non-doctor-visit-needing solution. The pain hasn’t hindered my running or my other workouts yet, but I have a feeling we might be approaching that point if I can’t figure out how to heal on my own. Chris keeps urging me to go to the doctor. I should… but I’m stubborn. This is not really a happy, other than I think I found the name of my problem, which is always a relief. Naming the pain is the first step — solutions follow naming. Healing follows naming. Whoa #lifebomb.
3. A friend gave me a New York Times Cooking subscription for Christmas, and I am loving the HECK out of it! In three weeks I made 12 new recipes: several new dinners, a new protein-packed lunch, some new baked goods, an amazing flourless cake, and a delicious, hearty stew. Several recipes have officially made it into rotation. It just reminded me how much I love trying new recipes and how satisfying good food is.
4. I have a couple Shakespeare “insults of the day” tacked up on my work cork board, and they make me laugh every time I look at them. I saved them from when I had the calendar in 2017 specifically because they apply to my work as a fundraiser and to me as a person:
“Let’s meet as little as we can.” As You Like It. (FUNNY, because fundraisers ALWAYS want to meet but introverts NEVER do! I live a conflicted life.)
“You, minion, are too saucy.” The Two Gentlemen of Verona. (I am too saucy and I’M NOT SORRY)
“I must tell you friendly in your ears, sell when you can, you are not for all markets.” As You Like It. (Honestly? My favorite insult of all time.)
5. I also have a page from that daily calendar saved because of a quote on the back of July 12 from Barack Obama:
But what we can do, as flawed as we are, is still see God in other people, and do our best to help them find their own grace… that’s what I strive to do. That’s what I pray to do every day.
If we all did something like this every day, in our work and in our relationships, the world would be a much, much, much better place.
